Dulcimers Often Begin With The Gentle Touch Of A Scrub Plane

Well, the rough stock from the mill receives the gentle touch of the scrub plane before I start making dulcimers with it.
Well, the touch of the scrub plane is not all that gentle but it gets a rough and uneven board close to flat and square very quickly and leaves a surprisingly decent surface in its’ wake.
Scrub planes usually have a flat bottom and a tight radius on the cutting edge and plow through wood much like a gouge. I find scrubbing rough stock a very satisfying experience. Thick and curly shavings pour over the bench and floor as rough wood reveals its’ secrets and beauty.
